IMPORTANT INFORMATION BELOW FOR POTENTIAL DOG ADOPTERS!!
Tips for those summer months with your pet!
History of the Shelter
The current McDonough County Animal Shelter was built in 1985 following a fundraising effort by a committee of  local citizens with the support of McDonough County and the City of  Macomb.  The new building was a tremendous improvement over the previous “Dog Pound”, which was primitive at best.  Members of the fundraising committee, having accomplished their goal of building a new shelter, and regrouped to form the Humane Society of McDonough County.  The  HSMC  has always been involved with the Shelter, with the goals of promoting adoptions and spay/neuter programs.” The current animal shelter is located in Macomb, Illinois which is also home to Western Illinois University.
John Hallwas wrote an  article  for the McDonough County Voice about Rose Jolly who was the forerunner in anti-cruelty work for animals in McDonough County.  A Women’s Social Service Memorial is being raised in Chandler Park in the spring of  2015.   Rose Jolly was born in Macomb. Illinois in 1876 daughter of TJ Jolly who managed the Randolph House Hotel and later the Park House Hotel and Jolly Café.  In 1909 she organized social reform for the “protection of children and animals from neglect and abuse.” In 1911, she reported her previous years work  had entailed  “responding to 40 calls, which involved 30 children, 20 horses, 3 dogs, 3 cats, and 1 cow.” She also called for the establishment of a local orphanage and a dog pound.
